Nevers’ Band Morns the Loss of Dr. Robert Rainie
He was the son of Herbert W. Rainie who was the band’s conductor from 1940 – 1950. Bob Rainie was in medical school during some of his father’s tenure as conductor but joined the band in 1955 and played until 2011, celebrating a venerable band career of 56 years. Bob was often the band’s featured soloist, playing popular trombone and baritone solos that his father had arranged specifically for him. Bob’s daughter Jiffi, plays French Horn with the band and followed in her grandfathers footsteps as conductor for 6 years. In addition to being an accomplished musician, Nevers’ Band has gained so much from Bob’s excellent musicianship, passionate involvement and vigorous support. We will miss his beautiful solos, his smile and his vigor for the music he loved so very much. | ||
A Message from the Director:
I am the new conductor of the Nevers’ 2nd Regiment Band and I am excited to join an organization with such a rich history. The Nevers’ Band dates all the way back to the civil war and has had a number of very distinguished members over the years, including world renowned composer John Adams. I am proud to be a part of this tradition. We have made a few changes to the band recently. Instrumentation has been expanded to approximately forty members. Most notably, this includes the addition of double reeds, a full four member horn section and a regular timpani player. Our concerts will continue to offer a variety of summer POPS material. The majority or our programs will be made up of light, fun selections, but we will also be putting a new focus on a small number of very demanding classical compositions. Recently, we have been working on Nevers’ alum John Adams' "A Short Ride in a Fast Machine.” We now invite outstanding guest conductors to conduct about half of our summer concerts. This keeps things fresh and exposes the band and audience to a variety of new repertoire. The band has recently been guest conducted by Bill Drury - Associate Director of Wind Ensembles at New England Conservatory, Gary Corcoran - recently retired Director of Bands at Plymouth State University, Phil Martin - Band Director at Campbell High School, and Ben Greene - Assistant Principal and former music teacher at Concord High School. The Nevers’ 2nd Regiment Band celebrated a milestone 150th anniversary on July 31, 2011. We look forward to providing the greater Concord area with exciting, educational and enjoyable concerts for years to come. Rick Cook, Director |
